90 – You’re Heart Will Lead You Astray

by Jill McKinley

In a world that often tells us to “follow our hearts” and “live our truth,” it’s easy to get caught up in the idea that we are the center of our own universe. However, this mindset can lead us down a path of self-worship, where we prioritize our desires and emotions above all else. This blog post delves into the dangers of self-worship and offers an alternative path to true fulfillment by embracing a God-centered life.

The notion of following one’s heart is deeply ingrained in modern culture. From popular songs to social media mantras, the message is clear: your happiness is paramount, and you should do whatever it takes to achieve it. But as Thaddeus J. Williams argues in his book, Don’t Follow Your Heart: Boldly Breaking the Ten Commandments of Self-Worship, this approach is flawed. When we elevate our desires above everything else, we risk creating idols out of our emotions and instincts, ultimately leading to emptiness rather than satisfaction.

Williams outlines the “Ten Commandments of Self-Worship,” a set of cultural norms that encourage us to prioritize ourselves. These include mantras like #FollowYourHeart, #YouDoYou, and #YOLO. While these slogans may seem harmless, they reinforce the idea that our personal desires are the ultimate guide in life, rather than the teachings and commandments of God.

The Bible warns against this self-centered approach. Psalm 115, for example, speaks of the futility of worshiping idols, which can be anything that takes the place of God in our lives, including our own desires. When we focus on ourselves, we become like those idols—mute, blind, and ultimately lifeless. True fulfillment, on the other hand, comes from placing God at the center of our lives.

This shift in focus requires us to reject the cultural norms of self-worship and embrace the teachings of Christ. It means recognizing that our lives are not about seeking personal happiness at all costs, but about serving others and following the path that God has laid out for us. By doing so, we can experience the peace and joy that comes from living a life that is aligned with God’s will.

In conclusion, while the world may tell us to follow our hearts, true fulfillment comes from following God. By rejecting self-worship and embracing a God-centered life, we can find the peace and purpose that we are all searching for.
