Matthew 12 - Who Is Your Real Family?

Matthew 12 - Who Is Your Real Family?

Today, we will be exploring the teachings of Jesus and their implications in Matthew 12. One of the main themes in this chapter is the Sabbath, Jesus' role as the Lord of the Sabbath, and how the Pharisees interpret Sabbath laws. As we encounter the incidents of Jesus healing on the Sabbath and feeding his disciples, we confront the criticisms of the Pharisees. However, Jesus challenges these criticisms, saying that the Sabbath is meant for man and He, as the Lord of the Sabbath, is the ultimate authority on its observance.

The chapter also delves into the topic of good and evil, emphasizing the importance of actions reflecting inner character. Jesus speaks of good trees bearing good fruit and bad trees bearing bad fruit, confronting the Pharisees as a 'brood of vipers' for their evil deeds. He also warns of the unforgivable sin of blaspheming against the Holy Spirit. This is a challenging passage that I feel requires careful consideration and possibly a deeper discussion with a trusted spiritual leader.

There is a clear fulfillment of the prophecies from Isaiah and Jesus' declaration that He is greater than Jonah and Solomon. The three days Jonah spent in the belly of the fish prefigures Jesus' death and resurrection, and the repentance of the Ninevites and the Queen of Sheba's journey to hear Solomon's wisdom foreshadow the Gentiles turning to Jesus. Moreover, the passage about an unclean spirit returning to an 'empty house' with seven other spirits emphasizes the danger of a spiritual vacuum and the need for positive spiritual filling.

Finally, the chapter ends on a powerful note as Jesus redefines family, extending His familial ties to all who do the will of His Father in heaven. This is a beautiful and inclusive message, affirming that we are all part of God's family when we follow His will. Reflecting on these teachings, I find myself contemplating the true meaning of the Sabbath and how I can better align myself with God's will.

Matthew 13 - Parables For All Listeners

In this podcast episode, we explore the teachings of Matthew 13 which comes mostly from parables. He tells parables, and then he emphasizes the importance of truly listening and internalizing His messages. The main theme is the parable of the sower and the seeds, and how people receive and respond to God's word differently. Some people understand and cultivate it, becoming fruitful, while others ignore it or let worldly distractions choke it out.

He tells us that it's not our job to judge or separate the 'good' from the 'bad.' Only God can do this, and He will do it at the end of days, not before. It may be difficult for some to accept, but it's crucial to remember that God gives us all the time we need to stop resisting Him and accept His salvation. We look at the parables of the mustard seed and leavened bread, which metaphorically illustrate the growth of God's kingdom from seemingly small beginnings.

We then move on to the parables about the hidden treasure and the exquisite pearl. Both stories emphasize the immense value of the Kingdom of Heaven and how it's worth sacrificing everything to attain it. The last parable is about the net thrown into the sea, filled with both good and bad fish. This parable is similar to the parable of the wheat and the weeds, reinforcing the idea that it's not our job to judge or separate; rather, it's God's task, which He will perform at the end of days.

In conclusion, we should truly listen and let God's message penetrate their hearts. We can have a desire to be the good soil that receives God's word, nurtures it, and yields a fruitful harvest. Consider what type of soil you are and to avoid being choked out by the thorny bushes of worldly distractions.
http://thebibleinsmallsteps.com/matthew-13-parables-for-all-listeners/

Matthew 11 - He Will Teach Us

In this episode, we explore Matthew 11 and its significance in the narrative of Jesus's ministry. If we look at John the Baptist's imprisonment and his message to Jesus, asking if he is the one who is to come. Maybe he worried about his fate or if he was wrong about Jesus. Jesus responds by telling John's disciples about the miracles he has performed and emphasizing the importance of faith in him.

We then examine Jesus's critique of the towns that rejected him despite witnessing his miracles. He highlights his difficulty in spreading his message, even when accompanied by miraculous signs.

Next, we delve into the metaphor of the 'yoke' used by Jesus to convey his teachings. He invites those who are weary and burdened to take his yoke upon them, promising that his yoke is easy and his burden is light. This message reflects the grace and comfort Jesus offers to those who follow him, contrasting it with the burdens and expectations placed on the people by religious leaders of the time.

Finally, we reflect on the importance of understanding and accepting Jesus's teachings, regardless of societal pressures or preconceived notions. We highlight that faith and understanding often transcend worldly wisdom and conclude with an invitation to learn from Jesus's gentleness, humility, and the rest he offers to those who follow him.

-Matthew 10 - Apostles Called and Instructed

In this chapter, we talk about the calling of the disciples by Jesus. These were the first laborers sent out to gather the harvest after Jesus asked them to pray for them to come. The disciples are given the power of Jesus to perform miracles, heal, and share the word of God. Jesus tells them not to carry many things but to let the towns and homes they visit care for them.
Moving into the second part, the challenges that the disciples are set to face. The stark reality of the persecution they will face from the synagogue, the government, and even their own families. People will bring the sword and punishments of the governmental structures to His followers because of Jesus and His Word despite it being a message of meekness and peace. Despite the grim picture, Jesus assured them they need not fear, for the Holy Spirit will guide them in what to say.
In the third part, Jesus says their reward is that of the righteous and the prophets. If they do what He says, the smallest kindness shown to his apostles will be rewarded too.

Matthew 9 - Who Needs Jesus?

Matthew 9 - Who Needs Jesus?

In the first part of our discussion, we explore Matthew 9, where Jesus returns to Capernaum after the pig incident. In the first few verses, we see Jesus healing a paralyzed man and forgiving his sins, which caused controversy among the scribes. In a surprising turn of events, Jesus calls a tax collector named Matthew to follow him, which leads to a gathering at Matthew's house with other tax collectors and sinners. This prompts the Pharisees to question Jesus's company choice, leading to Jesus's response that he came not to call the righteous but sinners. He reminds us that the sick need the physician, and each of us is in need regardless of background or heritage, or choices.

Next, we delve into how Jesus responds to questions about fasting from John's disciples. He uses the analogy of wedding guests not fasting while the bridegroom is present. Jesus also introduces the parables of the unshrunk cloth and new wine in old wineskins to illustrate the incompatibility of new teaching in tattered and inflexible containers.

The narrative then shifts to a series of miraculous healings performed by Jesus. He raises a ruler's daughter from the dead, heals a woman who has been suffering from a bleeding disorder for 12 years, gives sight to two blind men, and restores speech to a mute man. Each of these miracles highlights the faith of those healed and the compassionate nature of Jesus. Despite being accused of casting out demons by the power of the prince of demons, Jesus continues his miraculous works, demonstrating his divine authority.

Finally, as we reflect on the closing verses of the chapter, we focus on Jesus's compassion for the crowds and his call for laborers for the harvest. The image of the harassed and helpless crowd, like sheep without a shepherd, underscores the people's need for guidance and care. Jesus encourages his disciples to pray for more laborers for the harvest, which makes it clear that we are all called to be laborers and share in spreading the kingdom's good news. This call to action presents a challenge for us all: to become the answer to others' prayers and participate in the miraculous work of God's harvest.

Matthew 8 - Fear and Horror

Matthew 8 - Fear and Horror

We look at Matthew 8, where Jesus descends the mountain and encounters a leper who asks to be healed. It’s a significant event, not only because a leper would typically be ostracized and kept at a distance but also because Jesus physically touches the man to heal him, which is highly unconventional. I’m also exploring the encounter with a centurion who seeks help for his paralyzed servant, thus showing a level of compassion that was likely unexpected for a Roman. But Jesus reveals the ultimate compassion, and we see that the Gospel is for everyone as is sitting with the Bible leaders in heaven.

Next, I’m discussing a situation where a scribe expresses a desire to follow Jesus, only to be cautioned about the uncertain lifestyle that comes with it. Jesus, being omniscient, is likely not disturbed by these interruptions (we think) of people begging for healing, but He sees them as part of his plan. This chapter also raises questions that left me contemplating what comforts or securities I might be unwilling to give up.

Then, I’m examining the account of Jesus calming a storm on the Sea of Galilee. It’s a fascinating instance of Jesus demonstrating his command over nature, causing even his disciples to marvel after their fears. I’m reflecting on how this event reveals the disciples’ lack of faith despite what they have witnessed Jesus do. It’s a reminder that faith is a continuous journey, and it’s not without its trials.

Lastly, I’m focusing on the story of Jesus driving out demons into a herd of pigs. This event leads to the destruction of the pigs, which upsets the townsfolk and leads them to ask Jesus to leave. It’s a stark reminder that people can sometimes prioritize material possessions over spiritual liberation. The reactions of the people in this chapter serve as a challenge for us to follow Him no matter what the costs.

Matthew 7 - The Good and The Bad

As I delve into Matthew 7, I can't help but think of the day the people who heard this sermon and how impactful it was to be there. At the end of the chapter, people were astonished and in awe.

I also talk about the metaphor of the speck and the log, which warns us against focusing on minor flaws in others while ignoring our significant faults. It's important that we live a life that God would be pleased with, even though it may be challenging.

Jesus warns against the wide gate that many people take, leading to destruction. He encourages listeners to stay true to their faith and walk the narrow path. Recognizing false prophets by their actions is also crucial. It's essential to note that we cannot judge a person's heart, but we can evaluate the fruits a tree bears. Every action either brings us closer to God or distances us from Him.

Lastly, I discuss building our lives on a solid foundation or rock, which I interpret as Jesus Christ. Life can be challenging, but those who have built their lives on the rock of Jesus can withstand these trials. If you feel shaken by life's storms, seek help to build your life on the rock, which is Jesus Christ. In everything, God tells us to ask, seek, and knock, and as a good father, he gives great gifts his children need.

Matthew 6 - His Will Be Done

In this episode, I'm delving into Matthew 6, part of the Sermon on the Mount, where Jesus discusses righteousness and how to live a righteous life. He's packed it with teachings on prayer, giving, fasting, and worry. It all starts with a warning against "performing righteousness " in front of others. Instead, we should do things because they're the right things to do, and God will see and reward them. Then, Jesus teaches the Lord's prayer, emphasizing the importance of sincerity and focus on God.

We also analyze the concept of serving God and money. We can't serve two masters; if we try to balance between God and money, we're likely to fail. We should be focused on serving God and living righteously, not accumulating wealth. Jesus reassures us not to be anxious about our daily needs; God knows and understands our needs. He advises us to seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all our needs will be provided.

Moreover, I explore the idea of forgiveness. We ask God to forgive us our debts, to forgive our sins, to forgive us like we forgive other people. We should forgive others for their trespasses, and then our heavenly father will forgive us. If we don't forgive others, do we want to be forgiven in that same way? We want better forgiveness than we give others. It's a reminder to let go of anger and bitterness towards others.

In the end, the message is to live a life focused on God, doing things to please him, not to show off to others. I learn that I should pray, fast, and give in secret, trusting God to reward me. I should also be merciful, forgiving, and not be anxious about my daily needs. I remind myself to seek first the Kingdom of God and his righteousness, and everything else will follow.

Matthew 5 - Be Happy and Fortunate

Matthew 5 - Be Happy and Fortunate

Today, I'm delving deep into Matthew 5, a critical Bible chapter often cited for the Beatitudes. This chapter lays out the framework for our conduct as Christians, presenting a direct counter-narrative to the approach taken by the Pharisees and Scribes of Jesus' time. Jesus, in his sermon, instructs us to be 'salt' and 'light,' valuable and radiant, not to hide these qualities but to share them with the world.

In this chapter, Jesus also discusses anger, lust, divorce, oaths, retaliation, and love for one's enemies. He emphasizes that sin is not just about our actions but also our intentions and thoughts. He counters the Pharisees' tendency to find loopholes in the law, reminding us that the law is not about technicalities but the state of our hearts. If we harbor anger or lust in our hearts, we are as guilty as if we committed murder or adultery.

Jesus' teachings on divorce and oaths underline the importance of commitment and truthfulness. He warns against divorce, stating that divorcing one's spouse can lead them into sin. On oaths, he advises us to let our 'yes' mean 'yes' and our 'no' mean 'no' - we need to be honest and straightforward without swearing oaths. He also encourages us to turn the other cheek, give generously, and love our enemies, reflecting God's generous and forgiving nature.

The chapter ends with a call for us to strive for perfection, as our Heavenly Father is perfect. Indeed, it's a tall order, and the Pharisees' attempt to skirt the law will not help us achieve this. However, as we strive to live righteously, we can be confident in God's grace, knowing that our salvation ultimately comes through Him.

Matthew 4 - Jesus Overcomes Temptation

Matthew 4

In this episode, I want to dive into Matthew Chapter 4 from the Bible. We’ll explore the three temptations that Jesus faced in the wilderness and how He used scripture to resist them. The devil uses scripture to create temptation, but Jesus shows us how to overcome it by also using scripture. Jesus understands temptation, having lived through hunger, poverty, and temptation, and He uses the Word of God to conquer these temptations.

I also want to take a closer look at why Jesus chose to begin His ministry in the region of Galilee, particularly in Capernaum. I believe Jesus chose this area to reach a diverse audience, as Galilee was a crossroads for various civilizations. By healing people’s physical ailments and preaching the gospel, Jesus attracts large crowds from surrounding areas, fulfilling the prophecy in Isaiah 9.

Let’s not forget the calling of Jesus’ first disciples - Peter, Andrew, James, and John. They were all busy with their work when Jesus called them, showing us that God usually calls people actively engaged in some occupation. As we reflect on Jesus’ first words of ministry, “Repent for the kingdom of heaven is at hand,” we can interpret this as an instruction for us to turn from our sins and rely on God’s word.

I’m struck by Jesus’s compassion in addressing physical and spiritual needs. Jesus faced our daily struggles to love and understand us fully.

Matthew 3 - Jesus the Baptized

In this episode, we explore the significant role of John the Baptist in Matthew Chapter 3. John serves as a bridge between the Old Testament and the New Testament, concluding the Old Testament and ushering in the New Testament through his ministry. John’s message centers around his baptism of repentance and his preaching about the coming of the kingdom of heaven. His lifestyle and mission mirror those of the Old Testament prophet Elijah, fulfilling the prophecy of Elijah’s return before the Messiah.

The crowd that comes to John for baptism is diverse, including people from inside and outside Israel, Pharisees, Sadducees, and possibly some future apostles. This reflects a universal longing among people for cleansing from sins and a closer relationship with God. However, John rebukes the Pharisees and Sadducees, warning that a mere claim to religious or ethnic heritage is not enough for salvation. He uses vivid imagery of a fruit-bearing tree and a wheat separation process to emphasize the importance of genuine repentance and righteous living.

A pivotal moment occurs when Jesus arrives to be baptized by John. Despite John’s initial resistance, considering himself unworthy to baptize Jesus, Jesus insists, marking the beginning of his public ministry. The Holy Spirit descends on Jesus like a dove, and God’s voice affirms Jesus as his beloved Son, pleasing to Him even before the start of his ministry. This event signifies Jesus’ fulfillment of Old Testament prophecies and His readiness to embark on his divine mission.

Consider where you would place yourself in the crowd around John and Jesus. The key takeaway is the universal call to repentance, confession of sins, and reliance on God’s love and grace rather than on personal achievements or heritage.

Matthew 2 - Faithful Joseph

In this chapter, Jesus’ genealogy is traced back to Abraham and David from the side of his adopted father, Joseph. The circumstances surrounding Jesus’ birth are then described. Mary and Joseph were betrothed, which was similar to being engaged. In their culture, this was a serious commitment that was not taken lightly. They had probably exchanged vows, but the marriage ceremony had not yet occurred and could be months away. They did not live together or act as husband and wife.

Joseph was known as a just man, which some interpreted as a special holy man, while others believed he was just and faithful. When he found out that Mary was pregnant, he planned to divorce her quietly. He could have publicly accused her of adultery and ruined her reputation, but he chose not to.

However, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and called him “son of David”. The angel instructed Joseph not to divorce Mary but to take her as his wife because the child she was carrying was conceived of the Holy Spirit. This was a difficult situation for Joseph since it suggested that he was lying about his purity before marriage or that Mary had been unfaithful. Despite this, Joseph obeyed the angel and took Mary as his wife, but they abstained from relations until after the birth.

The child was named Jesus as instructed by the angel. This fulfilled prophecies from the Old Testament, including Isaiah 7:14, Isaiah 8:8, and Isaiah 8:10.

The Bible in Small Steps Introduction & Information

Go From Self-Help to God’s Help

We’ll be discussing an amazing book by Father Jonathan Morris called “God Wants You Happy, From Self-Help to God’s Help”. Join me as we explore the concept of God’s desire for our happiness and how it differs from the self-help industry, which often promotes self-reliance rather than reliance on God.
We’ll contemplate being junior partners with God in our lives, acknowledging our weaknesses, and allowing God’s love to lead us. As we delve deeper, we’ll examine the virtues of faith, hope, and love as a means to achieving happiness.
Faith encourages us to focus on God, read the scriptures, and pray regularly. Hope is cultivated through acknowledging our wrongdoings, making amends, and holding ourselves accountable. Love is demonstrated by living a life of love, as Jesus did, and recognizing that we should love others because God loves them.
But the journey towards happiness isn’t always easy. There are potential hindrances, such as pride, vanity, and love of pleasure, that can manifest in our daily lives and impact our relationships. We also consider the external threats that could disrupt our relationship with God, such as failing to pray or taking God’s grace for granted.
That’s why we emphasize the necessity of an action plan to overcome these obstacles and threats. This involves admitting our powerlessness, turning our will over to God, making amends, and following a plan to hold ourselves accountable. We affirm that God wants us to be involved in our plan, using His guidance to navigate life.

Matthew 1 - Special From the Beginning

The Bible in Small Steps Trailer

Hi, this is Jill from the Northwoods. Welcome to The Bible in Small Steps, where we will explore the Bible one chapter at a time. Whether you're a long-term believer, just curious about the scripture, or just someone like me who wants to do a deeper dive and understand the most important text ever written, that's what we're going to talk about.
Three times a week, we're going to read a chapter a day. We're going to start with the New Testament, and then eventually, we'll get to the Old Testament, look at the rich and complex story, and investigate what's going on. Who wrote these books of the Bible? Where were they written? Who was the audience? And some historical context.
I'm not a pastor or formally trained, but I am a passionate seeker of wisdom and truth. I love the Bible, and I have a stack of books. And I use the powerful Logos software. Together, we will look at the historical context, the timeless messages in each chapter, and the places where they're cross-referenced and referenced. We'll talk about the places and people who are in these chapters so that we have a better understanding.
With each episode, we will break down the chapters, discuss the themes, and see how they connect to our daily lives and how they should change our activities, prayer life, and meditation. We'll learn much about what God expects from us and what we can expect from Him. And whether you're listening at home, in your car, or on a break, it'll be short enough and concise enough to enjoy it anywhere.
This podcast will be a companion in discovering the Bible at a pace where we can truly absorb and go through things. This will be such a slow crawl through the Bible we'll be able to understand each point thoroughly. There will be new episodes every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, meaning you will read the next chapter on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. So, I even give you time to stay current with the podcast so you can also do a deep dive with me. And if we hit a topic that deserves a little more attention, I
So please subscribe. You can go to thebibleandsmallsteps.com, which will show you how to connect to this podcast. So, let us embark on this great new path together and find out what we can learn by studying God's Word.
I look forward to sharing those joyful moments, the tearful moments, and the inspirational moments that come with reading God's Word. See you next time.
